Capstone Work
This body of work depicts the effect mental illness has on one’s perception of self. Individuals living with these conditions face numerous roadblocks and I enhance their true beauty and depict the weight they carry as something noticeable and disruptive. The portraits are a likeness of those closest to me with additions of various lighting protruding from inside their forms. This allows the feelings attached to their illness to be made visible and allows the viewer to experience the minute ray of hope that resides in everyone. Each piece is created with the entity that the subjects relate to their experiences. The overall composition encompasses the heartfelt impact of each illness and the day-to-day battles faced by these everyday people.

Artist Statement
Mental illnesses are seen as “fake” or obsolete in comparison with physical injuries or diseases. The resistance, procrastination, fear, hatred, and confusion brought on by these diseases make life seem impossible. Not being able to complete assignments, maintain relationships, or even the ability to administer basic self-care. Throughout life, being called hysterical, overdramatic, or asking for attention. To everyone else, it’s seen as an excuse or way out when that isn’t the case at all. Wanting to complete projects, make friends, and experience life like everyone else is something that Every individual strives for. Being told to “just do it” or to “suck it up and move on” messes with the mind as you begin to believe it’s “all in your head.” Having to fight with yourself and survive your own mind is not easy.
My work presents the personal struggles experienced by the people featured in this series, including myself. The mind is often clouded with a false sense of self and fools the mind into believing these feelings are wrong, that the body is disfigured, or that our needs are unimportant. The inclusion of random and seemingly mundane objects each represents the personal effect and impact on the individual. Regardless of our struggles and hardships, there is always hope even if we don’t believe it at the moment. By introducing light in the illustrations, I show that we have the ability to overcome our fears and hardships, open doors to recovery, and discover our own inner light. This light serves as an inspirational beacon to others and a reminder that there is always hope.
Works of Art
Enervation of Lavender
Depression and fatigue took their toll on the body and the world. Sleeping in place brought back the lost world and rejoined the soul with nature.
Burning
Anger builds up. You don't show these feelings. Extinguished on the outside but scorching and stinging it's way to the surface. Eventually, it bursts. Anger builds up.
Lonesome
A chance to breathe. Sitting at the edge of the world trying to catch up to your own head. The heart glows and aches in the nothingness until you exhale.
Carpe Diem
Throughout life, we find our people; those who become our family and help us through the world. Celebrating each other and escaping expectations and judgments.
seen
Judgment coming from the soul and piercing you with its long stare. Every moment under strict watch and supervision. You can't mess up.
The Divine
Guide, protect, and advise; Leading to a sense of calm. Which way to go from here? This existence was lost but not forgotten.
Swarm
Suffocating on words and unable to breathe deep. Covered by an outside force constantly coming back like a moth to a flame. Stress became a beacon to the world's grip.
Ache
Feeling ugly, useless, or forgotten. The body is organic and moves and changes with time and care. Hating and destroying what grows and protects. Beauty can grow in the areas without life and can thrive after damage.
Façade
This is not who you are. Changing and editing the perception of others. Miserable and aspiring to be the same. Pulling and morphing into someone else. This is not who you are.
Hive
Buzzing and full of energy. Close to danger and scared of the self. Trying to protect yourself from the feeling inside. Turned into a husk of the former you. This life is not yours anymore.
